Analysis: The meaning of There Will Be Blood is that pursuit of wealth, without consideration for others, leads to personal downfall.

Examples that support this There Will Be Blood analysis

References to falling:

– Daniel falls down the hole in the beginning as he hurries down the ladder
– The rig falls after catching fire
– Daniel’s “son” announces his plans to go to Mexico
– Daniel stumbles down the stairs in the final sequence
– Eli falls in the bowling alley

Covered in mud after the fall:

– Eli falls into the mud, and later falls into the bowling alley
– The oil worker is covered in mud after the rig equipment falls
– Daniel’s “brother” is very dirty before being killed
– Daniel is very dirty after killing his “brother”

References to the pursuit of oil, and likewise the pursuit of sustenance, leading to blood

– “I drink your water, I drink your blood of lamb”
– “I drink your milkshake”
– The examples of oil leading to death and destruction
– The film is called, There Will Be Blood, but even with all of the deaths, there is no blood until the very end, showing how the pursuit of wealth leads to the shedding of blood, even if this cause and effect relationship is not immediate
